to Visit on the Yucatan Peninsula
Xcaret Park
Xcaret is a unique attraction which promises its visitors the diversity
of Mexican culture and the wonderful natural world that Mexico and
the Riviera Maya can offer. Around 6 miles South of Playa Del Carmen
and 35 miles to the South of Cancun, Xcaret occupies a beautiful
location amongst tropical grounds and on the beautiful coast facing
the Island of Cozumel. Xcaret Park is a superb attraction which
will entertain, educate and delight visitors.
Underwater Paradise
Enjoy the calm waters of the beach at Xcaret which are breathtakingly
clear. Alternatively, why not experience the soft currents of Xcaret’s
underground rivers (Cenotes) You may also opt for the ever popular
Dolphin encounter or take in one of the park’s other popular
activities such as snorkeling, snuba (combination of snorkeling
and scuba diving) or a sea trek.
Mayan Wildlife
Discover the Mayan jungle and its mysteries by meeting a Jaguar
– sacred animal to the Maya. See how 20 regional species of
butterflies emerge from their chrysalis and learn about Xcaret’s
sea turtle protection program. There is also an opportunity to get
a closer look at the colours of the reef, it’s coral sponges,
sea stars and other crustaceans in the Coral Reef Aquarium.
Mayan Culture
Xcaret offers a great opportunity to learn more about the Mayan
people and to explore fascinating archaeological sites built by
the Maya to worship their gods. You will also discover the secrets
of a singular cemetery (one of its kind in the world) and visit
the authentic Mayan village where you will learn about its traditions
and customs including seeing craftsmen and weavers at work. You
will also enjoy a Mexican party – Adelitas, Charros, Horses
and traditional songs in a colorful spectacle.
Mexican Folklore
If you only do one thing in Mexico it must be to visit Xcaret’s
Folklore show (each evening at 19.00) This jaw dropping show features
over 300 performers set in the park’s arena and traces The
history of Mexico from the Maya, through the Middle ages to the
Conquistadores, and on to the present day. Watch ancient sports
including a hockey type game played with balls of fire (staggering)
to the conquering of the local people by the Conquistadores and
then on to the joy of a Mexican fiesta. The music and dancing are
choreographed superbly and the show will leave a lasting impression.
Other Information
The park also has shops, 9 restaurants, various nature trails, caves
and a chapel. To enjoy Xcaret see your rep at the welcome meeting.
Hidden World Cenotes Park
One of the Riviera Maya’s most amazing hidden treasures are
the Cenotes. These are formed due to the water from the Yucatan
Peninsula flowing underground to the ocean. As this happens, the
water carves out passages in the limestone leaving caves and sinkholes
and offers a subterranean glimpse of a world sought by divers and
snorkelers alike.
Hidden World Cenotes Park is a great option for all of the family
with jungle snorkeling adventures, cavern dives and above the subterranean
world, the chance to enjoy the thrill of a six hundred foot zip-line
which is a harnessed ride above the jungle taking you at speed from
the top of the park’s tower.
Swim with Whale Sharkes
A whole lot more exciting than swimming with trained Dolphins in
a tank!
Just to the north of Cancun is Isla Holbox which is home to migrating
whale sharks each July and August. At Holbox you can safely swim
up close with these harmless creatures. The tours depart early each
morning and include luxury boat transportation to swim area, trained
and licensed guides, and safety and snorkel equipment.
Fifth Avenue
Playa Del Carmen sits at the heart of the Riviera Maya and was once
a sleepy fishing village. Today it is a chic cosmopolitan town and
at its centre is the famous Fifth Avenue.
Fifth Avenue runs through the middle of Playa Del Carmen and is
the regions longest shopping district. It is awash with boutiques,
souvenir shops, jewelry shops as well as many excellent tequila
bars, restaurants (lobster is a great specialty on Fifth Avenue
and is very reasonably priced). Be prepared to haggle and negotiate
on Fifth Avenue as you will get some great deals. Also, if you are
buying alcohol Mexican shops cannot sell after 2pm of Sundays.
