Our holidays
to Mexico are concentrated around the Mexican Caribbean in the north-east
of mexico. Flights arrive at Cancun International Airport from around
the UK, and all resorts are within a maximum of 2 hours transfer time
from the airport with many under an hour away.
Cancun is the most famous and well-known of the area's resorts and
its hotels are within around 20 to 30 minutes transfer time from the
airport. Cancun can be viewed as two distinct places with downtown
Cancun being the hub of the working city with many hotels, restaurants
and shopping areas. Cancun's hotel zone on the other hand occupies
a strip of land, shaped like a number 7, of around 25kms which has
the Caribbean on one side with the Nichupte lagoon on the other. The
hotel zone is home to the larger hotels as well as shopping malls,
restaurants and boasts some fantastic beaches of white talcum sand
lapped by the warm turqoise waters of the Caribbean.
Cancun is also famous for its fantastic nightlife with some great
bars, restaurants and discos including Coco Bongos, Bulldog and many
other exciting venues.
Heading south from Cancun you will first come to Puerto Morelos
which is a sleepy fishing village where tranquility reigns alongside
beautiful beaches in this charming Mexican fishing village. Puerto
Morelos has the benefit of a beautiful reef just 500 metres offshore
and the town has been awarded the status of a 'National Marine Park'.
There are a number of excellent hotels close to Puerto Morelos including
Azul Hotel, Secrets Excellence, and El Dorado Royale.
A few miles beyond Puerto Morelos lies the larger city of Playa
del Carmen which has become a popular resort over the years as well
as being the port for ferries to the island of Cozumel. Playa del
Carmen incorporates Playacar which is where the larger resort hotels
are mostly located. The resort has grown up alongside the ocean
with the main roads running parralel to the sea. The most famous
of these is Fifth Avenue where there are superb opportunities to
shop as well some great Mexican bars and restaurants with Lobster
available in many places at a bargain price!
Playa del Carmen also offers an excellent beach at Coco Beach which
gives access to the Chunzubul reef and is an excellent place to
do some snorkelling.
Puerto Aventuras is the next port of call on the southward journey
down the Riviera Maya. Puerto Aventuras is best known for its marina,
- the only one along the Riviera Maya. The town is popular as the
destination for swimming with dolphins as well as being the centre
for sport and big-game fishing on Mexico's Caribbean coast.
Tulum is the southern-most point of the Riviera Maya and it offers
a combination of a beach, archaeological ruins, and a town. You
could say that there are three distinct areas which make up what
is commonly referred to as Tulum.
Of course the area is best known for its ruins which sit alongside
one of the most beautiful beaches on the Mexican Caribbean making
this a great place for your Mexican holiday. A couple of our most
popular hotels are located near to Tulum ruins - Dreams Tulum and
Gran Bahia Principe. Both of these hotels are highly recommended
by this website and make an excellent base for those who wish to
mix a bit of culture with their beach holiday.
